  3. The conclusions we can legitimately draw from this study are that although the study achieved statistical significance for decreased mortality in males, the NNT suggests that some patients or physicians may not believe that the results are clinically significant. Treatment plans should be individualized based upon discussion with an informed patient. Treatment decisions should also be limited to those patients who are typical of the patients in this study; that is middle-aged male patients at high risk who already have clinical coronary disease. The study shows strong evidence that once coronary disease is established in men, aggressive lipid lowering improves overall mortality in men. This study does not show the same benefit in women. Attention should be paid to all risk factors in considering the most appropriate approach. Although some women may wish to pursue lipid lowering, they should be aware that the data do not show overall benefit in terms of survival.
  4. The ideal study: This study was well designed. However, future studies might include more women and a longer follow-up.
