| Ask a Medical Librarian FAQ |

What is instant messaging?
Instant messaging (IM) is real-time chat over the Internet where users type short exchanges back and forth. The UCI Libraries are using instant messaging to provide online reference services over the Internet.
I don't have any IM software installed on my computer. How do I get started?
If you have a web browser, you have all the software you need to send an instant message to our medical librarian.
How do I IM a medical librarian?
Just open your web browser to the Grunigen Medical Library homepage and click on the Send Librarian an Instant Message button!
When are medical librarians online?
The pilot service is open when the Reference Desk is open, Monday - Friday, 11:00am - 6:00pm. If we are busy or unavailable during these hours, you may contact us at 714-456-5583 or gml@uci.edu.
How do I know who I will talk to? Can I talk to a specific librarian?
The IM a Medical Librarian reference service is operated by different librarians at various times. You'll likely get the librarian currently working at the Reference Desk.
Will I need to wait to chat with the librarian?
IM questions are taken on a first-come, first-served basis. If the librarian is currently assisting a patron, there may be a wait period. Alternatively, you are welcome to email a librarian at gml@uci.edu, call the Reference Desk at 714-456-5583, or visit us in person for assistance. (Please see our Directions page)
What type of questions can I ask?
IM works best for brief communications, generally under ten minutes. For inquiries requiring more time, librarians may ask that a session be continued in person at the Reference Desk.
Who can use the IM a Medical Librarian service?
This service is intended primarily for UCI students, faculty, and staff along with the UCI Medical Center community, and for anyone with questions pertaining to UC Irvine, the UCI Medical Center, and the services and resources of the UCI Libraries.
What about privacy?
The Grunigen Medical Library is committed to privacy protection. Please refer to our Ask a Librarian Privacy Statement for more details.
